Zoomer in Boomerland: My Adventures In The Philippine Anime Community Part Deux

Last Time…

I ranted and raved about the modern anime community and how it imploded under its own cringe and became a hotbed for controversy (especially sa “cosplay subcommunity” as I’d like to call it because parte pa rin ng anime community ang “coscom” kahit gaano nila gustong idistansya sarili nila sa general fanbase) and how it is today. Ngayon, we go back to the past and deal with the “batang 90s”.

Ano Nga Ba Ang Batang ’90s?

Ayon kay Rex Felix C. Salvador I ng Eagle News, ang mga batang ’90s daw ay yung mga tao na nakaranas ng kanilang kabataan noong dekada 90 but this has been subject to debate. Some claim that people who were born during the decade aren’t considered to be “batang 90s” because they haven’t experienced the decade in all of it’s glory.

See, most of the people who are claiming that they are “batang 90s” were born in mid-late 1980s, a time of social and cultural change in the Philippines so ganoon na lang ang page-gatekeep nila sa dekada nila kasi sila naman ang nakaranas nito eh, di tayong mga millennials” or yung mga “zoomers” na sumunod sa atin. The Marcoses are out, foreign programming is in, and boy pag sinabi nating foreign programming, dito na papasok ang anime and tokusatsu.

Voltes V Returns And He Brought Some Friends With Him

Now that the Marcoses fled to Hawaii after the monumental yet controversial 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution, the networks were returned to their “rightful owners” after being controlled by Marcos cronies, and to gain huge ratings in this new playing field, hulaan nyo kung sino ibinalik nila.

Back in 1979 kasi, binan ni Apo Makoy ang Voltes V and other super robot shows on the grounds of “excessive violence” and was replaced with Honey Honey.

I am not sure why Telesuccess chose Honey Honey because in ’79, Gundam was already on air in Japan during that time and that show fits the “Marcos narrative” na the republic is in danger from outside forces but the liberal opposition used it as propaganda para sabihin sa mga bata na “Marcos bad, Aquino good” and this worked, akalain mo nga naman.

So 1986 came and went, and PTV 4 re-aired the series with the already dubbed 35 episodes retaining its cast and then came the infamous “last five episodes” which were dubbed by a different set of actors, save for Dodo Crisol as Prince Heinel. Aside from Voltes V and friends, may mga iba pang anime and tokusatsu na lumabas during this time.

Super Sentai, so popular na kahit sausage, mabenta.

In 1989, IBC-13, a Marcos era leftover, aired the first ever Super Sentai season to be dubbed fully in Tagalog: Light Squadron Maskman, the series’ eleventh season.

At this point, the first idol boom in Japan was long over, Nintendo ruled the roost in video games and Super Sentai was going down in ratings with Turboranger but that’s not the case here sa Pilipinas as Maskman became a hit that a re-airing of Bioman was welcomed with open arms and even Fiveman, the show that almost killed Super Sentai in Japan, tinanggap natin ng buong puso. So much so na up until now, may mga batang 90s na nanonood pa rin ng tokusatsu dahil sa Maskman.

If Maskman ain’t enough, then Shotaro Ishinomori brings you the goods. Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you, Kamen Rider Black.

Kamen Rider Black, aka Kamen Rider season 11 and the second to the last Rider TV series before the series revival with Kuuga, aired in Japan on October 4, 1987 just as Shoko Asahara founded Aum Shirinkyo during that year and how Japan experienced its economic bubble. This was during a time when Kamen Rider was due for a revival as the season before it, Super-1, wasn’t considered as much of a hit as Black was when it aired.

Sa Pilipinas naman, it aired at a time tokusatsu reruns are big and Kamen Rider was, for all intents and purposes, dead on Japanese TV. Airing on IBC 13, of course, in 1993 and nahumaling kaagad ang mga batang nanonood kay Kota- I mean Robert Minami este Akizuki (Really? I mean Robert makes sense but not Robert Minami?) and his adventures as Kamen Rider Black.

IBC and RPN got the dibs on both Rider and Super Sentai, then ABS-CBN got the dibs on the Metal Hero series, especially with Shaider.

The third in the Metal Heroes series and the last in the Space Sheriff saga, Shaider aired on TV Asahi, home of Antonio Inoki and NJPW, on March 2, 1984 and dinub naman ng ABS-CBN somewhere in 1988.

..and like the shows that came before it, naging patok sya sa mga batang 90s pero never ever siya natapos ng kumpleto sa TV, mapa ABS-CBN man or GMA or even IBC pero tumatak ito sa mga kabataan noon because of three things: it’s association with Maskman and Kamen Rider Black, Annie (alam niyo na yan) and Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan (that will be another story for another time).

May mga tokusatsu pa na naging popular dito na di ko na ibabanggit like Ultraman or Machineman kasi pag sinama ko pa dito, lalo lang hahaba itong section na to at di tayo matatapos dito.

The Monkey King, The Ghost Fighter, and The Sailor Scouts

Kung anime lang ang paguusapan ng mga batang 90s, tatlong pangalan lang ang lalabas: Dragon Ball, Ghost Fighter at Sailor Moon.

Yu Yu Hakusho – aka Ghost Fighter (di ko rin alam kung bakit ito ang naisip na pagalan ng Telesuccess) was a manga series penned by famed mangaka and Dragon Quest fan Yoshihiro Toagshi back in 1990 in Weekly Shonen Jump, as both Slam Dunk and Stardust Crusaders were still running in the magazine.

Siguro alam niyo na yung setup nito pero para doon sa mga nakatira pa sa 1985, tungkol ito sa isang teenager na nagngangalang Yusuke Urameshi (or mas kilala dito bilang Eugene Walangapelyido) na naging isang spirit detective after mabangga ng truck (isekai much?).

Much like other Jump anime na nagigng popular pagdating ng isang arc, say Frieza arc for Dragon Ball and Stardust Crusaders for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, YYH got it’s rise to fame during the Dark Tournament arc, so much so na this was the arc the series was associated with when people talk about it.

“Sensui? Yomi? Sino yung mga yan? Basta alam ko Eugene suntok Taguro” ang nagiging sentro ng usapan pag Ghost Fighter ang topic and di mo rin sila masisisi kasi, ayon kai Utoi Anime Talk TV, ito ang tumalo sa ABS-CBN pagdating sa primetime TV, which was headlined with Mula Sa Puso with the late Rico Yan.

Ganyan kalaki ang pinagbago ng pagtanggap ng masa sa anime simula nung binalik si Voltes V sa ere nung 1986 because up until April 1999, anime was considered kids programming and to add insult to injury, it was a rerun of something that was rejected by IBC 13, something that will never EVER again sa current landscape ng Philippine TV.

Dragon Ball – The “godfather of modern shonen” although that title actually belongs to Kinnikuman, was and is the ultimate boomer shonen manga created by the master of poop jokes Akira Toriyama back in December of 1984.

The anime aired on February of 1986, a year into the manga’s run and a week after Dr. Slump’s first anime aired it’s last episode and boy napakakomplikado ng history nito sa Philippine TV. If you want to know more about that part of the story, you can click here.

Same with Ghost Fighter, Dragon Ball peaked when it hit the Frieza arc, something na lahat ng tao, alam na alam na, Goku goes to planet Namek (or Nemic), beats Frieza, Frieza kills Kuririn, and Goku becomes the legendary Super Saiyan (and no, DBZ Broly isn’t canon).

Sa arc na to, pati sa Majin Buu arc, natunghayan ng mga batang 90s kung paano maging Super Saiyan, paano gumawa ng Kamehameha at paano manghuli ng isda gamit ang buntot mo (joke lang yung last part). So much so na inabangan ng mga tao dito ang Dragon Ball Super but unlike Mexico, we didn’t hold live viewings of the final episodes in large halls to say that we really love Dragon Ball pero ito ang masasabi ko, unlike Funimation, how Toei Animation PH and Telesuccess handled Dragon Ball pretty well and although they didn’t milk the franchise enough na they make enough money for themselves.

Sailor Moon – Ito na yata ang na masasabi kong counterpart ng DBZ pagdating sa shoujo anime. Airing in Japan two years before the PH airdate, unang pinalabas ito sa ABC 5 on October 1994 at ito rin yung naging tahanan ng Sailor Moon series from the first series up to Sailor Moon Sailor Stars, the fifth and final season.

Not much can be said on Sailor Moon here aside from some dub changes on the original run and on the ABS-CBN rerun in 2012 and that crossover with Dragon Ball that no one should ever mention again, naging popular ito sa mga babaeng batang 90s na kumbaga si Usagi ang naging Kakarrot nila, let’s just say it at that and who can forget yung mga katagang “Ako ang magandang tagapagtanggol ng pag-ibig at katarungan! Ako si Sailor Moon! Parurusahan kita sa ngalan ng buwan!”

Just like the Kamen Rider/Metal Hero section, may mga anime pa ko na di na bibigyan ng masyadong oras kasi again, hindi tayo matatapos dito pag sinama ko pa sila.

90’s Kid Elitism And Other Jokes You Can Tell Yourself

Now that we got the pseudo-history lesson out of the way, it’s time to take a look at what the internet did with these “batang 90s” weeaboos. Yes, may mga weeaboo na dati naging batang 90s, myself included and boooyyyy I have a lot of unpacking to do here.

Ikaw na may masyang pagkabata, boomer.

Tingin kasi ng mga batang 90s sa childhood nila ay especial na sila lang yung legit na nakaexpereience ng anime sa primetime and good tokusastsu shows. Um hello? May mga “millenials” din na nakaexperience ng naexperience nyo and as a mattere of fact, you’re millenials yoursleves mga nagfefeeling baby boomers.

Stop thinking that everything was better in the 90s and claim that technology took over kaya “puro kadramanahan at kalandian na lang natututnan ng mga kabataan”. For real? I mean not every shonen anime na nilamon mo noong 1997 ay hindi na mapapanood ng mga bagong henerasyon ng weeaboo ngayon. Andiyan si BitTorrent, si Nyaa.si, si YouTube at andiyan rin ang mga download sites from 2006.

Ito pa yung nakakapika sa mga batang 90s na weeboo na nakikita ko sa internet: ang “Ibalik Ang Anime Sa Hapon” brigade.

Kesyo puro drama sa hapon na daw ang napapanood ng mga kabataan at dumadami ang populasyon ng Pilipians and I, for one, advocate of bringing back anime sa hapon and heck, even on primetime and late-night blocks if possible but for the love of God, don’t be like GMA na puro reruns kasi when they say “ibalik ang anime sa hapon”, they actually mean “ibalik ang mga palabas na napanood na namin sa hapon”.

When they say “ibalik ang anime sa hapon”, they mean this.

Here’s the thing, it’s fine to air the old anime na kinalakihan niyo’t minahal but come on, let’s get some variety in here. You can pepper in some modern anime like To Aru or modern Crayon Shin-chan together with your Lupin IIIs and Yu Yu Hakushos and everybody will be happy.

Also, it would be nice to have some anime on late nights, because let’s face it, if the zoomers don’t watch TV on afternoons, paano pa kaya kayong mga batang 90s? Nasa trabaho ka maghapon, nasa biyahe ka pag primetime, matutulog ka ng maaga from Sunday to Thursday para pumasok kinabukasan

Maybe it’s time to accept na it’s not our time any more and let the weebs have their own time in the sun.

The End of The Road

So we’ve reached the end of my story. Now what? Will these digital rants change how these people act? No. Ang akin lang naman, as much as I hated and loved where I am now, I can’t be ignorant about the sequence of events that made the community as it is right now.

I do appreciate the batang 90s who brought consciousness to my mind about anime when I was 7 to the community, and friends, I enjoy being with and sometimes make fun of right now but the past is the past, wala na akong magagawa about it. and it’s up to me to use the experiences of my past to get in touch, and maybe, change the community I am in now for the better.
